The
NAACP is proud to host the private screening of this
film which is intended to capture the heart and spirit
of the community and embrace life struggles and triumphs
of
Barbara Smith Conrad.
Barbara entered the
University in 1956 as part of its first racially
integrated undergraduate class. She earned her
Bachelor
of Music degree in 1959. Her accomplishments and
determination as a student remain an important chapter
in
the University of Texas history. The film,
“When
I Rise” depicts the life of Barbara Smith
Conrad.
A gifted black music student who thrust herself into the
civil
rights storm which changed her life forever
when she was cast in an opera to co-star with a white
male classmate. Fueling a racist backlash from members
of the
Texas legislature Conrad goes on to become an
internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano and headlines
on stages around the world.
